While you can shop for anything at any time—like bathing suits in winter or snow shovels in summer—there are some things that are best bought during specific months, based on availability and expected discounts and sales. To help you shop smarter in February, the savings experts RetailMeNot have analyzed retail data and determined which categories are the hottest (and most on sale) right now.

Below are the five best things to buy in February—along with the average discount you’ll find on each product type—from tax software to flowers.

1. Computers and electronics

If you’re in the market for a new computer, TV, tablet or laptop—and you don’t want to wait all the way until November for Black Friday sales—you can find almost-as-good deals during President’s Day weekend (and around Super Bowl weekend). The average discount on electronics in February is 41%, so you could snag a new smart TV or sleek laptop for almost half off. 

2. Tax preparation services

Tax season is upon us, and while you may have until April 18 to submit yours, many people are getting a head start on their 2022 taxes this month. According to RetailMeNot, February brings an average 35% off tax prep services and software, like H&R Block and TurboTax. Our experts dubbed those the best tax software of the year, thanks to how easy they are to use.

3. Fragrances and perfumes

Whether you’re looking for a gift for your Valentine or want to treat yourself to something luxuriously scented, fragrances and perfumes will be an average of 26% off in February. While there are plenty of places to buy perfume online, some of our favorite picks include Nordstrom, Sephora and Ulta. There, you’ll find fragrances for both men and women in a wide variety of scents, styles and prices.

4. Flowers

Valentine’s Day is quickly approaching, which means more and more people are looking for the best places to buy flowers online. Ahead of February 14 (and even after the fact), you’ll find many of the top retailers offering discounts on flower delivery, from romantic red roses to more extravagant arrangements. Starting spring cleaning early? Looking for a better night’s sleep? You can accomplish both of those goals by shopping home goods and mattresses before February ends.
